One of the most common questions we get is about the two different methods of coloring concrete. Here’s a quick rundown of what we can do to beautify your concrete project.

WHEN MOST PEOPLE THINK OF COLORED CONCRETE,

They usually imagine concrete that has been stamped with textured mats so that the concrete takes on the appearance of stone. Many of the “stone” surfaces that you walk on at modern upscale retail establishment are actually made from stamped concrete. Stamped and powdered concrete is most often found outside on concrete patios and pool decks.

The color comes from a powder that is brushed onto the stamping mats before they are placed face down on the wet concrete. The powder works as both a coloring agent and as a means to prevent the stamps from sticking to the wet concrete. When the stamps are removed and the concrete has begun to cure, the powder remains behind. Much of it is washed away during the cleaning process, but what remains has become part of the concrete and has colored it so that it gives the uneven texturing of stone.

ACID STAINED

Acid staining concrete is a science and an art form all at once! Acid staining is performed after the concrete has cured and is hard enough to stand on. The acid is applied to the concrete and chemically reacts with the molecules in the concrete, forming a permanent bond.

THE ART IN ACID STAINING COMES FROM ITS UNPREDICTABILITY;

The artist, density of the concrete, and how far the concrete

is in its curing process can all play into how the final project will turn out. Once the acid has bonded and the color is approved, sealers are applied over the concrete to protect it. Acid stained concrete is most often found indoors in garages and finished basements.
